I am really committed to our class blog and feel that there have been lots of great things occurring there on a nightly basis. Now, I want to hear from you.
What have been some of the helpful, interesting, challenging, practical, or other positive thoughts you have experienced using our class blog, pb works, and google docs?
What is another way the blog could be serviceable to enhance our learning?
Also, how much time per night are you spending on your math HW overall and on the blog, pb works, or google docs specifically?

I agree! But I think it would help to have a place where we could get help on nightly homework questions. For example I have no idea how to do question 8 on the latest worksheet! I figured out every other problem, I even googled problem 4 after I thought about for a while and found the answer. But I can't google question eight. I have tried twice to post questions I had under the homework assignment, but no one answered it. I think everyting else is working quite well though. Honestly solving nightly questions online would be tough because you would have to consantly chenck if someone answered your question. I think we should start off every class with just one or two homework problems, so we can see you do it right for sure! Also most people will tend to have the same questions, so it shouldn't take to much time!
ReplyDeleteI think overall that the blog can be somewhat overwhelming, it's really inconvenient to have to look up the homework daily. Because sometimes I have to leave right after school to go somewhere so I'm not near a computer and if I already knew the homework for that night i could do whenever I have ideal time before I get home. And I think keeping all the different programs separated can be confusing at times. And the other thing is when checking homework I'm always weary because I never know if that person's answers are correct. But besides that it's fine. And I spend about 2o mins nightly.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the blog is overwhelming at first. It took me a very long time to get the hang of it and I still feel like I'm not 100% sure how to work everything. I feel like our math assignmnents are very spread out, which makes it harder to organize and finish quickly. We may have an assignment in the book, a PoP on the blog, vocab on google docs, and answers on pbworks. It's hard to prioritize what I need to do first and when I need to get it done. The homework and classwork we've done have been easy to handle so far, although I feel like the daily quizes catch me off gaurd. Daily quizes are something I can impove on throughout the year.
ReplyDeleteI'm still confused on how to get to the answer sheet on pbworks and have not been able to enter my answers because I'm still haveing trouble navigating this blog. I feel like it would be easier if we could check answers to the homework at the beginning of each class to see if the group has questions, and then move on to the rest of the lesson. Earning a 0 because it was confusing to enter the answers into the blog is not fair, especially if you've done all of the homework.
The good thing about this blog is the feeling of community all periods working as one group. I think the scribe is an excellent idea, especially if you are absent and need to know what went on in class that day.
I think the blog is a good idea, however at first it IS hard to navigate. I think like Jocelyn and Miranda said, it'd be good to either go over homework first thing in class and discuss it as a group (because I know I have questions!) or somehow get the answers posted up on PBworks in case we don't get it.
ReplyDeleteI do like having the homework always accessible online, however I feel like this just gives me another excuse to go onto the computer, which I really don't need.
I really like the scribe idea, for the same reason as Miranda, but I think we all really need to get used to how to scribe.
I think I spend about 20 mins on hw/blog/etc.
While using the internet for this class I have been able to get answers to problems and questions I would have had a lot of trouble with finding the answer to.
ReplyDeleteWe could make the blog...... better. I'm not sure. I think the only thing that would make it better or easier to use is if instead of needing the google docs and all the other sites, we could just post everything on the blog itself.
It takes me somewhere near 10-20 minutes depending on my understanding and how many problems there are.
I think the blog could be helpful. I think that the metrics workspace was a good idea, I like that the homework is posted on here and that the scribe reviews what happened in class that day so that if I am absent I won't feel like I've missed too much.
ReplyDeleteSome issues I have with the blog: I feel a little overwhelmed resource wise. I feel like I could get more out of the material by just writing down notes from a lesson in class, reading the book, and checking my homework. I think that the Pop is cool, but I would prefer that it be extra credit, because I feel that if you are going to take part in a discussion about controversial math stuff, that it should come from the heart-only if you are moved to take part in the discussion and not if you are required to do it. I also think it would be a better use of everyone's time if Jojo were to put the answers up on the blog for each homework assignment, not how to do each problem, just the answers. Then, we could check our homework, if we have trouble with a problem we could discuss it on a homework discussion page, and then Jojo could check for our work the next day to make sure we did our homework.
I think that the Blog was created with good intentions and that it is possible for it to be very helpful once some innovations are made.
Math takes me about 20-30 minutes per night.
When you first told me about the blog and ho we are going to use it for class, i was not so happy about the idea, now since i have used it a couple of times i think it was a good useful idea that will help me. I love how the hw is posted on the website so you can always look to see if u have hw that night. only thing i dont like about doing work on the internet is because i get easily distracted.
ReplyDeleteI dont think you can make the blog any better, you just have to get use to it and when u do it is a easy blog to navigate around.
homework takes me a good 45 min.
i believe that the blog is an interesting way to learn math, but i prefer the classroom method of learnig, where we learn more math and have to rely less on internet sources.
ReplyDeleteif there were more teaching involved than student learning, the blog may be more helpful. having said that, i believe that the structure of this class has kept the state of the blog as the best it can get.
i spend about 5-10 minutes on hw every night.
The blog is an extremely useful resource for me, I love the idea of a blog. But when I atually use it to collaborate on assighnments, figure out homework assighnments, ect. I feel like the blog is too complicated. I feel like the internet is unreliable sometimes, and it makes me uncomfortable to rely so heavily on it for homework assignments and grades. I would really like it if we could recieve the homework assignments in class, maybe jojo could write them on the board and we can copy them down and they would be on the internet also! This would make me feel more confident in the class! I really love parts of the blog- such as scribe posts, they are a really useful overview! I also love the vocabulary documents that we collaborate on, they are such an amazing resource and they really help me. Overall: As I learn more about the blog, and how to use it, I apprecitate it more and I know how to use it towards my advantage. It's like our...math community! It's really great, and it's an excellent resource. However, I don't want it to be my only resource, I would like to do more in class so for example, I would able to succeed in the class if my internet wasn't working for one night.
ReplyDeleteI spend about 20-30 minutes on math homework every night. Sometimes it takes me a while to navigate the blog! It's pretty complicated! But I'm getting better at blogging.
I agree with miranda on a Lot of what she said about the class. I feel as if the blog is a good idea in theory but I also feel as if we as a whole aren't really fit to help each other on math if majority of the people aren't very sure about the work. I also feel that the more time we use it the better we will get at explaining things via blog. I agree with emma on posting for points. I dont think we should be required to do something that we dont truly feel intrigued or interested about...That creates about 30 posts of BS. Nah mean? Homework isn't too bad of a load but I feel like having to go to different sites to do all the homework can be time consuming during the night while we have other home work. If the vocab was split between students and was done during class I feel that would be more affective. Overall I dont have too many complaints about the class I just feel that if we could somehow "tighten some loose screws" the blog might actually be beneficial rather than time consuming and confusing.
ReplyDeleteI prefer what ive been exposed to most of my math life, just the typical math class, and not having a blog, simply because that what im used to. But the blog has been getting better, it was a little tricky to figure it all out at first, but now im getting all the kinks out. I like how the hw and everything is posted, and so everything is all in one place that i can check when i need 2, granted it does change from time to time, but thats ok. So far the blog is working out fine. It does get a little time consuming to have all the different sites for all the different work though, i know its only a few, but other then that, every things pretty good. I spend about 30 mins every night doing hw, so its not to bad.
ReplyDeleteThis post is now closed to grading. Please continue to comment if you would like.
ReplyDeleteThe blog is probably one of the most difficult things about the class. I am not tech savvy and have trouble figuring it out.i prefer just being able to ask the teacher a question and not relying on technology. I feel like this blog will greatly reduce my grade even thought im understanding the actual mathematics of the class. i dont like the blog...at all.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, thank you JoJo for taking the time and effort to create this place for our math class.
ReplyDeleteThere are things I like and dislike about the blog.
One thing I like is how easy it is to find the homework and I like the answer and vocabulary manuals, they make the homework easier and studying easier. The idea of sharing how to get answers through the web is an idea I have heard before, and I think that this blog executes it quite well.
Some things that I don't like about the blog is that I am disorganized and easily distracted, when I have to get online each night to figure out the homework it can lead to me becoming side tracked. This however is being fixed by JoJo giving us the homework at the end of class -- thank you JoJo-- and that being said, this is not something for the blog to improve on it's something that I as a student need to improve on. If you have this same problem heres something that I thought of today in class: make a shortcut to this website on your desktop. This is easy if you have a PC, and I'm sure it is if you have a mac (I just don't know how.)
An easy way to do it if you have a PC is add this blog to your favorites, search GTA and then drag the link to your desktop, because when you favorite a site it is saved in your computer, the link that is.
I think that this is an interesting idea and certainly chalenges the traditional ways of teaching mathematics, it's interesting. I think that it is too early for me to tell which method works better for me as a student, but I do not think that challenging change in the classroom is a good idea unless it has been tried before. For instance: teachers used to complain that students use pencils to much, that they can't properly use a pen,and before that they complained that students couldn't properly use a quill, see the trend?
All that being said, I think the blog is an interesting idea and it has helped and hurt me, but I think that the more you try to work with it instead of fight it the more it will help you, like so much in life.
I think that the blog COULD be helpful SOMETIMES, but I feel like it's more spread out than it needs to be. There are three different places where we have to post things (I know this isn't on a nightly basis): PoP, PB Works, and Google Docs. It's a pain to do everything in separate parts rather than just getting it done all in one place.
ReplyDeleteI do realize that this is the internet and it's a lot faster and more efficient than talking about it in person, but doing all of this is still a bit obnoxious. I'm not trying to be a jerk; I'm just being honest. PB Works is unorganized and a lot of information spaces are present (such as incomplete homework assignments, class notes, vocab, etc).
It would be helpful to put the dates on the homework assignments rather than the day numbers because, even though the daily assignments are color-coded, if you need to look back and do previous problems it can be a bit challenging figuring out which day was when.
I spend about 10 - 15 minutes on homework every night, about 5 minutes for every PoP, and it depends with PB Works.
And again, I'm REALLY not trying to be a jerk. But I don't really like / understand why so much emphasis is placed on the blog. This is a huge part of our grade, and I'm not sure why. It has little to do with Geometry itself; even though we're posting about it and "collaborating," I feel like the only way I can learn the actual material isn't on the blog, not on PB Works, not on Google Docs and not in class; teaching myself from our textbook has proven to be the most effective method of learning for me in this class.

ReplyDeleteThe blog is useful, yes, but some of the material on it i feel should be covered in class, such as the homework assignment. Some nights, I just don't have time to check the blog for the homework, and cannot complete it if it has not been mentioned in class.
ReplyDeleteThe blog is an excellent idea, but if it were used slightly less and more material that is on the blog was also covered in class, it would be much more useful.
Now that finals are here, I'm really thankful for everything on Googledocs as they are very useful for studying. I think that having our answers posted on googledocs is also helpful. However I get annoyed with the blog since often I don't have time to check a computer before I start my homework. Or I'll check the blog every night for a week and nothing is added, then I'll forget to check and I'll miss homework. Like Marc said (above) I think it would be more helpful for me if more of what is on the blog was covered during class. Both the homework and the lesson information. Also I don't have many paper notes from this year, and while the information on googledocs is extremely detailed and comprehensive, it's harder to transport a computer around with me to study. So I wish we had more paper notes
ReplyDeleteIn the beginning of the semester i was not to thrilled by the idea of the blog. However now that its time for finals and we have a comprehensive study guide for each chapter i realize that the blog is actually great. I feel like next term i will find ways to better utilize the blog from the begging of the term.
