I really loved my Crime and Punishment class this short term. I think the teaching stategie that really helped me grasp the information and truly undestanding it was hearing John C talk about the material, asking us questions and getting our insight.
ReplyDeleteI really liked being in the musical for my short term class. I know that it's not really a class, but compared to history and ethics it was much better. We did learn a lot in the musical though. It was our responsibility to teach ourselves a lot of the music which I really liked. We were taught blocking and dance steps, but we really had to keep up and teach ourselves the moves sometimes just to keep them refreshed in our minds. I liked being independent that way.
ReplyDeleteI only had two classes this term, British Detective Stories and Zombie Movies, both of which lasted two periods. While there wasn't a huge amount of work or literal learning going on in either class, both teachers made class and group discussions a big part of the curriculum. Talking about things we didn't quite understand or exploring the ideas of others is a helpful approach to fully grasping something.
ReplyDeleteI had an excellent short term. My classes were: Ethical Dialogue (required for all 10th graders)
ReplyDeleteAmerican History (required)
The Italians
Figure and Portrait in Ceramics
I really enjoyed my Italian class, I loved the opportunity to explore the Italian language and learn more about the culture and history of Italy. Eddy Hernandez taught the class, I believe that he is a very good teacher. He was very organized, but he was still fun to learn from. He had the great teaching strategies of teaching in a way where all students can learn.
His teaching was mainly auditory; he taught by speaking, but his lectures were supported by visuals. I am a very visual learner, and I think I got a lot out of the class because he showed us interesting movies in Italian, wrote on the board, and showed us pictures.
Ethical Dialogue was a class that was all about self reflection. I think it could've been a good class but a lot of the time, we were just sitting for two hours early every morning listening and, ever so often, talking. On special occasions there were times when we could really be a part of the discussion and get involved. The most positive aspects of the class were the activities that we did where we could all interact with each other as a group. I think that simply sitting in a classroom doesn't always keep the class at attention, but if teachers include the students on special occasions and really involve the entire class in the learning process, the students get a lot more out of it!
i took utopian worlds, black power, poetry and auto maintenance.
ReplyDeletei really enjoyed poetry because the students all participated, were involved and were a big part of the class.
in auto maintenance we often times would go and look at cars to see how everything all fit together, it made everything we learned seem relevant and therefore more interesting.
For short term, i had a pretty relaxed schedule, but with some hard reading material.
ReplyDeleteI had, British Detective Stories with Joanna, which was a great class. We read a bunch of mysteries and talked about them. We also watched a few movies, which were great as well. I enjoyed the suspenseful action that occurred in the stories and movies. What i enjoyed was some days we would have tea and cookies. It was really cool. We would drink British tea and at British cookies. I also had a class with Clark Cloyd called Dark Twain, which was a really hard class to understand. We read a lot of hard material, which made you think a lot. I had a trouble grasping that class, but ended up really enjoying it. For the rest of the day, i had Musical! Which was a lot of fun! I loved having that class and i enjoyed making new friends and meeting new people. I also really learned a lot during that class, when it came to, learning music and learning about the Japanese culture. I enjoyed short term a lot, but i am now really anxious for long term to start, cause i have a feeling its going to be a great term!
If you attended The Mikado, thanks for your support and I hope you enjoyed the show!
Also, what i really enjoyed about the classes i took, was i learned a lot about my learning technique. I seem to learn best, when I am less stressed. I found that i learned more when i really devoted myself to the materials and the subject. For instance, i really learned a lot about musical and music theory during the musical, because i committed myself to that show and worked really hard. In Dark Twain, I really learned a lot about myself when it came to "personal questioning". During the class we talked a lot of philosophical talk. Which was really a lot of free thinking, which was a really interesting way of looking at things. Such as life, i wrote an essay about the reasoning about why i am here on earth.. very interesting and intelligent thinking. I learned a lot this past short term, which was not expected :)
ReplyDeleteI had Small Metals, Vampires in Literature, and Witches. I really enjoyed all my classes. I had some trouble in Small Metals 'cause I'm not an overly patient person, and when you get frustrated making jewelry you tend to mess up. I ended up with some really nice pieces though. Vampires and Witches were both really fun because they are topics that I'm really interested in and already know a bit about. One thing I really enjoyed about learning during Short Term was that each of my academic classes had two teachers so we had different types of people that we were learning the same information from (that can't really apply during long term math, but still it was something I liked). I'm also kind of a history buff so I really liked learning about the evolution of vampires and witches from their folkloric roots into the modern ideas held about them now.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite class during short term was "Scary Movies" where we explored the underlying themes in various horror movies and the techniques that went into making the films. I enjoyed this class because of our group discussions which were mostly student run but guided by our teacher(John Capute).
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed my short term a lot. It was very relaxing but also super fun. I had Sherlock Holmes with Joseph, it was fun reading these stories for the first time. I then had West African drumming which was brilliant, after that I had Italian with Eddy which was a blast, simply because I love Eddy and I like learning languages...even though I had a hard(ish) time learning it because Italian is more like Spanish than French, and I take french. FInally, I had the musical which was my favorite part of the day. I was in the chorus but had an amazing time. the cast members all got really close and we had a lot of fun. As far as teaching strategies go, I'm not quite sure what to say...um, all my teachers taught their lesson with the goal of having fun which was cool and they were all really nice, other than that, that's it. Had a blast and now I am reluctantly ready for long term to begin up again.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite class in short term was American History with Laura. She did a good job of incorporating fun things into our class each day. While she led the class, whenever a student new how something happened she would let them explain it. I think that this is an important part of teaching because the best way to learn it, is to teach it.
ReplyDeleteI had three class Web Programming,Photography, and Women and Wellness. I think my favorite class was Women and Wellness because it was a relaxed class where we had a lot of discussions. I liked how we were able to go from one topic to another and everyone was honest. In my web programming class we would have to learn things by ourselves to learn how to create our web page. I like having that independence to learn on our own.
ReplyDeleteI had three classes, two of which were required, the rest of my day was taken up by the musical. I really enjoyed preforming in the musical this year. It was really fun to get together with friends durring most of the day and really work together as a team to pull the show together. We talked a lot about learning methods in Ethics (which was the class I had for the first two periods) and I found the most effective way to learn things was with other people. Over all, I really liked this short term, and learned a lot about teamwork and doing things in a group as a whole.
ReplyDeletemy short term wasnt very special, but my most interesting class was sports writing with jim veal. in this class, we had guest speakers who were professional sports writers, and read different kinds of writing. we also wrote a column for our final project.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed my history class and my ceramics class. At the end of
ReplyDeletepretty much every history class we played assassins (a game where there is an "assassin" and they wink at people to "kill" them
and they die-while the people try and figure out who is the killer)-it was really fun. The game was kinda like a reward at the end of class if we did well and payed attention..something to work towards, i guess. The ceramics class wasn't just a clay class, it was focused specifically on head/portrait and figure ceramic pieces. The class was about learning how to get the 3D dimensions of a face. In the class we mostly worked on our own, but at the beginning of a new thing such as the nose of a head everyone would pay attention to figure out. It was nice to be able to work together well as a whole class while learning a lot and then taking it and working on it alone or with some buddies and their ceramic pieces. It made it easy to learn and easy to remember for later, while adding your own touch to the piece.
This short term I had Planet Earth, LitMag and Introduction to Graphic Novels and internship. My favorite was Introduction to Novels. One because I really enjoyed the topic and also because we had good discussions. That's what helped me a lot as well as watching movies that connected to what we were discussing during class.
ReplyDeleteFor Short Term I took Word Games, Dr. Atomic, Yearbook, Italian and I had an internship at the Frazer Center. my favorite was by far the internship. I learned a lot about myself and being able to be responsible for something or someone. i loved it. But, the class i enjoyed the most was Italian with Eddy. We spent the first half of class learning words and phrases and the second learning about culture. We were able to tie the vocab in with the history and culture so it made me much more interested and I learned a lot more about Italy as a whole.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite class for this term had to be Making Poetry. Making Poetry was amazing because it allowed me to slow down and reflect, something that we rarely get to do in our first-come-first-serve world. Hearing Poetry written by other people was amazing, to see the different talents that everyone had. It was a great to get to know people in a deeper level; better than: "Hey how you? fine. Ok, bye." Strategy I learned from Making Poetry, slow down, and reflect on what your doing. Then take what you learn from reflecting and strategically look at something. I have been applying this method with all my classes this term; the method of reflecting and solving the problems I had last term from a different prespective.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Anatomy, because it was neat to get to dissect animals or parts of animals. I also really liked Aussi rules football. I was so much fun, and I really liked how we got to hands on learn at the beginning, and from then on we just played everyday, so that was awesome. I had a really good short term over all, I liked all my classes.
ReplyDeleteThis short term I had Ethics... In which I didn't really 'learn,' about anything but more 'discovered' about myself....
ReplyDeleteI also had Black Power, American History, and then the play.
The only two classes I had in which I learnt were black power and american history and since those are both history courses I don't know how much this review will help... But I'll do it anyways.
I'll review Black Power since I always have American History. I found the material extremely interesting, which always helps, and we did alot of reading and listening to of speeches, watching films, and using mixed media. We used a blog but my internet was down for 1/3rd of short term so I didn't really use it... At all. The medium of speeches and historical examples helped me in that course but I LOVE history... And I'm no expert, but I don't think you can teach a math class like a history class.
But I greatly, greatly, greatly, enjoyed it.
My favorite class was probably scary movies, but the class that I learned the best in was Web Programming. Dave would go over the things we were going to do in class then after he did that we would try to incorporate what he just showed us in our own web-pages using assignments he gave us as guidelines It helped a lot because he would show us what to do then lets us use it and if we forgot something or needed help we had a source to look up answers on and Dave would answer questions if you were still having trouble.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite class was defiantly planet earth. and i really feel i learned the most in it first because i was the most interested in it and i find it easier to learn when you are interested in the subject. and i really enjoyed watching the movies because it really helped keep my attention and made me want to keep paying attention. all in all i really enjoyed short term but am ready to start long term.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite class from short term was women and wellness. the whole class period was really just good conversation about whatever topic or teacher would give us. We had a research project at the end of the term which was fun and we also got to go out to eat on the last day. I really liked this class do to the relaxed attitude that we all brought, it allowed us to open our eyes to new things and other peoples opinions.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Short Term class was Snowledge. I learned alot about snow, and how snow is made, and the dangers of snow and ice. I found that doing hands-on things, such as labs, helped me really learn the material, and the Power Points our teacher made to explain the material also helped me visualize the information.
ReplyDeleteI only had 2 actually classes: ethical dialogue and math with Stacey. I really enjoyed math! Stacey was able to pace the material perfectly so I wasn't bored or overwhelmed and also helped me get a complete understanding of it by giving examples of concepts in my daily life, and watching me work practice problems. She also helped by showing me WHY things are true instead of just telling me they're true! By mathematically proving these concepts to me, she helped me remember and understand them better!
