PoP -Rapping Math Dimensions & Area

"'Rappin' Mathematician' meets the president as Teacher of the Year finalist", by Gary Warth. North County Times, 28 April 2009.
Alex Kajitani says his Rappin' Mathematician act was "born out of survival" in an effort to help students connect with and learn math concepts. An example of his rhymes accompanies the article. Wearing dark sunglasses and moving to a beat, Kajitani sings "What's that crooked line? It's a radical sign. When you see a perfect square, pull it out of there." Now he has earned national recognition as one of four finalists for the National Teacher of the Year for his unconventional teaching style. The winner of the award, Anthony Mullen (a special education teacher), will be released from classroom duties to travel nationally and internationally as a spokesperson for the teaching profession. Kajitani, who has been teaching for eight years, is 2009 California Teacher of the Year and will be part of the committee choosing San Diego County's 2010 Teacher of the Year. Several of his raps, like "The Number Line Dance", can be found on YouTube or on his CD, and feature his students from Mission Middle School.

  1. circles have a diameter
radius would be hafe of that
so if your radius is one centimeter
and you can square that at the drop of a hat
area we soon be in the palm of your hand
pi estimated is three point one four
area as pi radius squared keeps you out of sand
now do more math man more!!!

ps. took creative lincese with four rymning with more

  2. Diameter...
    Twice the Radius
    Circles...
What do you say to this?
    Area...
    Pi r^2
    Geometry...
    Merde.

  3. Bout to learn about a circle
    get nerdy like Erkel
first we start with the area that needs to be squared.
then we get the pi poppin from there.
Nothing but the symbol of Pi is exact
So the 3.14 and 22/7 can be pretty wack
but sometimes it's what we need
when trying to find the diameter steeze
the radius times two is what we use
so keep it straight and not confused.

  4. Ohhhh lord....this will be interesting

If you have a radius from the center to the side
then two of those make diameter
    (or c divided by pi)
area's a little tricky as jojo once shared,
the formula is A equals pi r squared
it's pretty straight simple if you know all your facts
just remember that only pi's symbol is exact.

  5. lets learn some math pi-high!
hey. pi is equal to approximately 3.14
also noted as 22 over 7.
for pi is a never ending number
    its a goin' on forever
    ever ever
the area of a circle is pi r squared
and r is the radius of a circle (not a square)
a radius is the measure from the midpoint of a circle to a point on the circumference.
    well whats the circumference?
the circumference is the perimiter of the circle going round and round.
so you can find the area using this equation
    so don't ever forget...
    PI R SQUARED!!!

  6. Circles are round, we've seen them many times
Their outsides curve, there are no straight lines
A radius is only half of a diameter, but
You need it to find the circle's area, what!
    The diameter is important, too
Because it cuts the circle equally in two
There's a very special symbol in the formulas
And even more so cause it represents us (go pythons)
Pi is there for every single circle that we see
It lets us find the values of C, r, and d
    C equals pi d or 2 pi r, rewind
Cause diameter is radius, not one, but two times
Area is pi r squared, we know that fasho
Cause we learned it in class from a guy named Jojo

^ an explosion of swagger :)

  7. Though it may not seem like it, circles contain many differnt things,
they aren't simply spheres, they aren't simply rings.
The very middle of the circle, is just called "center point",
and it you wont see it moving like an elbow or a joint.
If you look at the line from the center to the side,
thats where the "radius" will reside.
If you take the measure of the radius and multiply it by two,
thats when you'll get the diameter (who knew!)
the diameter of a circle is just the longest chord,
    and with all that,
    you'll never be bored!

  8. circles are a kind of shape
their area could be measured with a grid of tape
radius is from the edge to the middle
    it's not a riddle
trying to write a rap about the area
    gives me anxious hysteria
    really its quite simple
you take pi (its a symbol)
    and take the radius
    don't get delirius
    square it
    and you've got a hit
or you could've taken the diameter
    measures length like an odometer
    times it with pi
and you've got an answer anyone would buy

    i loathe rhyming

  9. Hip hoppin' with radius,
    it can be really advantageous.

    Multiply by two,
    is all you gotta do.

    You got the diamter,
    that's really flyameter.

Circumference is all of the circle,
I'm stealing the line about Erkel.

Yeuhhhhh. Dawg. Wack. That's what's up. Word.

  10. hahaha....Cake

If ur the point in the middle of geometric plane//
Where every distance from u tended to be the same//
It means ur a circle plz remember the name//
Cuz if u aint got that u wont understand a thang//
Now I can show U how to measure w/o having to straighten it//
But first i'll introduce you to the radius//
Any line seg that connects points to the center//
    It's represented by "r" now that's important to remember//
    Because 2r can give u (d) diameter//
Which is the longest chord that helps you find the perimeter//
In order to do that ur gonna have to use pi//
    Which is equal to//
    3.1415...Sigh...//
Well that was irrational and the opposite of simple//
So if you wanna be exact ur gonna have to use the symbol//
It looks funny but it don't make a difference//
Cuz pi times "d" equals "C"//
    Circumference//
So that little rap is urs to borrow//
And the rap about area is in class tomorrow//

  11. The area of a circle
Once we ignore all the hysteria
    And confusion
The disillusion that 2 is a mathematical operation
But really is just a denotation of space
But in this race to find the area, we must multiply Pi by r2
Using pi we can find other things aswell
So with just this information you will never fail:
    C/d=pi
    C=pi(d)
    C=2(pi)r

  12. circles are pretty rad
some times they make me pretty mad
    with no straight lines
finding area can take a longer time
    but don't stress it
    don't throw a fit
    it's a peice of 3.141592...
just wait until my rap's through
    just find the radical radius
and do the area formal with us

  14. A circle you say?
    Well if I may..
A circle is one big curve
    Somethin you gotta lurve
    Cuz it can be measuured
All you gotta do is know
Uh c d 3 and you ready to go
C is jus uh d times pi
And im tellin you this no lie
    R otherwise known as radii
    Is kind afly
Just do d divided by 2
    An you gotchoself thru
    This class and passed
Last is 3 if you wanna be exact
    Pi, I mean π is a fact
Cuz it can make a big impact
So that’s it your packed and you’ve cracked
    this math concept
All you gotta do know is accept
    that you are now adept
    YOOOOOOOOOUUUUAAAAAHH

  15. here is a circle,
no not like the shell of a turtle,
    this one is mathematical,
    and slightly classical,
it has a circumference, diameter, radius and even a pi,
the most tasty shape yeah u kno y,
3.1415.... flavors and yes that is only an approximation,
i can show you a few things by the way,
like you can find the Circumference if u multiply π by d,
    oh I almost forgot 2 r= diameter,
if a girl saying she doesn't like circles,
I won't ever talk to her,
and the diameter is the longest chord,
people looking like that is the most absurd thing they ever heard,
and people don't forget about the perimeter,
    see y'all tomorrow ya HEARD!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Lark on that tarp
cuz here i go 'bout to bark
circles r a circus if u can't get the circumference
like austin powers kno the equation or u'll be searchin for that mojo
    C equals pi times d.
don't be radical, remember the diameter
cuz if u can't how u suppose 2 get the radius?
    2 r = the diameter.
u gotta kno the chord yo, i mean the math one
it ain't the rope, or the bungee, or that A minor,
Pi is infinite kinda like C N N,
when u watch the news, measure the the perimeter, not the surface
don't forget the area or else u'll have alapisha,
    A=pi r squared.
math is wrath, but its easy if u rap, so be true not cruel and remember all the rules.

  17. im pretty hite so i wont rap about area
more pathetic than a mosquito with malaria
but ill talk to you about area
its pi(r squared) and it aint histeria (?)
pi2r is the equation for circumfrence
*the only rhyme that might make sense*...

    and 2r=d where d=diameter and r=radius....

    ReplyDelete
  18. I can't really make raps... seeing as I don't listen to rap. So i did a fair poem for it, hope its ok...

The points all the same distance from the center,//
The chords to connect the points, spiderwebbing
The radius times two times pi
Is the circumference, and thats why
    The diameter times pi
    Is the same
    The area is amazingly made
By multiplying the radius times pi squared,
And that is how the circle is made

    ReplyDelete
  19. cirlcle circle many dots
same distance from the middle spot
diameters long from point to point
radius would be half of that
    circles are strange
    not to be challenged
2pieR is the distance around them
the distance within is pie R squared
everything else we dont really care
i just told you the key to the chest
all of the rest stems off the chest
the chest is large but really quite simple
    3.14 is not coincidental
it always works wish is one of its perks

  20. uhhhh// so you wanna freakin rap bout circles huh?//wanna kno the perimeter and area yo?//k-roc is here to tell you so you aint feelin stoopid yo//2[pi]R is tha circumference//thats the perimeter//[pi]R[squared] is the area son//thats the stuff inside the circle if you didnt know//plug yo info in theses equations son//if you solve right you should get the right answer on your paper son//now you the smart guy gettin hella girlies son//all cuz you kno this lil rap bout circles dog//listen to my voice and you gon' get an A yo//k-roc is here to keep you from failin yo//WORD!
