Blogging on Blogging -Reflections -BoB Unit 1

There is a BIG difference between learning and just being there. Learning is an interactive sport; not a spectator sport. There has to be a conversation between us, back and forth, as we work through the material. Learning doesn't happen when I talk and you listen; learning happens when you have a conversation -- with me and with each other.

I am going to offer you one bonus point on your test with completion of a simple assignment.  I would like you to post your reflections on the material covered so far.  Just comment on this post.  To get that bonus on your test, the kind of post I'd like you to make should have one or more of these characteristics:
  • A reflection on a particular class (like the first paragraph above-how did that class enhance your learning?).
  • A reflective comment on your progress in the course.
  • A comment on something that you've learned that you thought was "cool".
  • A comment about something that you found very hard to understand but now you get it! Describe what sparked that "moment of clarity" and what it felt like.
  • Have you come across something we discussed in class out there in the "real world" or another class? Describe the connection you made.

  1. I went back over my notes and saw that the amount of practice problems I did on metric conversion really helped me remember the right conversations to use. At this point I really can't say I have been getting consisantly improving because my quizes are kind of scattered on how well I do. I enjoyed that the homework hasn't been a list of imposable assignments that make me mad and feel like I suck at math. That has been really nice! It is kind of sad, but the right way on how to write an angle just hit me in class today! That felt nice, but I wish I knew that before the quiz on Friday. I havn't seen something in the real world that involves what we are doing yet, but I know math is everywhere!

  2. the material that we have covered s far has been stuff that i have already learned, but now i completely understand it. by this time in the short term class last winter, i was completelty lost. right now, i am completely on my game in gta. in other words, this class has been a success and a great source of learning so far for me.

  3. The day when we were given the opportunity to check all of our homework was very helpful. If we had questions they got answered and this enhanced my understanding of the material we were/are going over.

I feel that my progress is continually getting better. My understanding has become better compared to previous years.

I thought the day when we found shapes in real life was cool. (The day we took pictures of mathematical shapes and objects.

I had trouble making my equations sometimes but after making equations a lot in class I now understand it more.

My mom asked me how many feet were in a yard. (LOL) I replied three and she said okay.

  4. I liked going over the homework today in class. It gave me an oportunity to ask about anything I was unsure about, and also made sure the whole class was on the same page. I think the worksheet we did was a good way to cover the vocabualry we've gone over and apply concepts we've learned.

I think personally I'm doing relatively well in this course so far. What we've done has been review for me and I feel I'm ready for the test.

The day we found geometrical shapes in real life was a cool way to find geometry outside of the classroom. It proved that math isn't only found at school.

I was having trouble with conversions when we first started doing them at the beginning of the year, but after looking at some old notes and talking to fellow classmates it became clear.

I use what I know about converting meters and yards when I need to convert my times from swimming in meters to yards. (sorry...swimming reference everyone...)

  5. -I think that all those days when we checked our homework and then did the problems we didn't understand on the board, were very helpful. I thought it was good how we didn't rush through things and how everybody interacted with figuring out the problem rather then just watching someone skim through it really quickly.

-I think i've definitely become more aware of all the signs on a geometric figure. I have definitely gotten all of the basics of an angle, triangle or line down. I was never really good with remembering all the rules like how the sum of two angles must equal 90 if it's a complementary angle, or the sign that means to measurements are congruent. I definitely feel like i've made a lot of progress in that department.

-I learned the conversions which is really awesome. All of the practice problems we did on the metric conversion sheet were very helpful and now i know miles to feet, yard to feet, feet to inches, inches to cm, cm to me, cm to m, m to km. I definitely think it's a "cool" thing to know.

-Well it wasn't that i didn't understand it this year in math, but last year in geometry i had a really difficult time remembering all the rules for angles, the names of certain angles and finding the measurements of certain angles or triangles. This year we've taken things at a really good pace and i really understand and remember the names of everything and how to set up mathematical equations to find certain measurements.

-Yes, i have. Actually, all of the practice on conversions helped me a ton in chemistry. In chemistry we do a lot of conversions when measuring out a certain amount of this or that. finding the volume, density and mass. All sorts of things like that. I was able to focus on some other things in chemistry more closely (which has been very helpful) rather then having to learn how to do the conversions.

  6. I really liked checking homework in class, because it gives us all a chance to participate and help each other learn the material. I think worksheets really help us because they can cover a broader subject range and not just one topic.

I think so far I've done really well in GTA3. I've really been trying hard, not just on the hw but on focusing better in class. I've done most of what we've covered before during Short Term, so it's being refreshed in my mind.

I really liked finding geometric shapes in real life. Capturing images was a good idea of doing it.

When I figured out conversions, that was a good moment. And I'm applying them in Chemistry which helps a lot. It puts me a step further than some other people who are having touble so I can help them.

  7. I Agree with Madison, i think that checking the homework in class really helps because it allows us to see how to work the problem along with asking questions. the work sheets helped me to see another way the math could be done.

I think i have done good in GTA3, there is always room for improvement. But i have done good on the DQ's so that must mean something.

I thought that exercise where we had to find geometric shapes was a great way to start school instead of just doing work for the first week.

I really like the comparison between chemistry and math with the conversion problems. it was nice to start with something i already knew very well.

  8. I think when we did our homework and then reviewed it together using the active board that was helpful. And having the answers on the internet is also very helpful as well. & OMG! I totally said now I see why I need to know gemotery in the real world earlier today. While in my dance rehersal the person who was teaching the cheogrpahy to us made a refernce to an 180 degree (the way our arms should be) and I knew exactly what she talking about. yay!

  9. Since I started this class I've been seeing geomerty everywhere I look. It's in buildings, sidewalks, everywhere. It's been cool seeing the stuff in the class room in the real world, that didn't happen with algebra. Not to say that algebra isn't cool. But as an artist I enjoy having my view changed, it's cool seeing the shapes come together to make reality.

  10. When i think back to my performance in my this class, i think that i could do so much better, than i have been. If i could rate 1-100, i would give my self 80%. I think that i could focus more on my homework, review the material more often and stay focus in class more. I have the ability to do well, but its a matter of buckling down and staying focus. i really want to do well this year, i want to get A's in both terms, and i think i can if i work hard enough.

I think that the way we cover the material, is taking adjustments and im having trouble taking it serious, to be honest. I think that the days when we covered and check our homework was really helpful. i really enjoyed that.

I think that the interactive webpage for this class is helpful, but at times its can be to much for my liking. To be honest, i think having three different pages, to check nightly. But im not the teacher, so i need to follow what the teacher says. I guess if i could request a certain thing for the class, it would be to have more time in class to work on homework. When it comes down in the end, its my junior year, and i dont want to slack off or get points just because i am not being able to finish my homework, or check the homework page every night. I dont know, its just hard at times. I hope that my focus and seriousness can settle in, soon.

Other than that, thanks for all your work Jojo.
and thank you classmates, for being supportive and able to be there to answer questions.

  11. I am confident of my progress and learning in this class. Although i have not scored perfectly on every quiz or done perfectly on all my homework i thing this shows that i am learning. went from knowing almost nothing about geometry to knowing ho to classify everything from alternate exterior angles to corresponding angles.

  12. I think is going alot better for me now than at the begining of the year. At first i couldn't find my way to do homework and study I think this class has made me learn how to study math more by myself. I wasn't used to it. And im getting better at it.

The coolest and funest activity we have done is the taking pictures of the geometric shapes in real life.

  13. The best moments in the class for me is when we have the Daily Quizzes... no I'm joking. I am someone who doesn't enjoy doing things that are abstract if I cannot relate them with "real" things. I can't zero in on a particular math moment, however, my favorite moments in class are when we relate what we are doing in class with the "real" world. For example, when we talked about the new technologies using geometry to build homes for those who are less fortunate really helped me to appreciate math.
Having huge sums of homework has really made it difficult for me to appreciate the work that I do. However, I appreciate how our math class involves other things (such as writing, reflecting, collaborating) rather than strictly mathematics. My progress I would say is that I am learning how to appreciate everything that my hand, mind, and soul participates in. In beginning of the course for example I had a lot of problems with conversions, but actually the Daily Quiz reviews we do have helped me understand the material better. I have been confused about terms, methods, etc and the quizzes clears them up often. I have actually used metric conversions in some of the wood work I do. I often build things with wood, so these conversions have helped me to build things.

  14. For me a lot of the clarity in my learning came from me taking notes in class. For example this monday in class when we went over our worksheets. I had barely aby of the questions done and the ones that were answered were wrong. After being in class though and seeing Jojo write everything out on the bored I realized that I had been overwhelming by trying to look at the problems as a whole rather than a specific line segment or angle in the problem. I also realize I wasn't taking my time to completely understand the problem I was just rushing into it trying to create an answer. But after looking in my notes I realized I knew the answers the whole time I just wasn't taking my time nor was I trying to see the "bigger picture" of the problem.

I think the video Jojo showed us of the buildings being created in a day was some thing "cool". It gave me a better understanding Of what I could Use from geometery class because I honestly believed that nothing could really prosper from learning this stuff at alll but I guess a house can be....

  15. I particularly remember the class day that we learned how to do unit conversion problems. This is such a valuable thing to know how to do. We did a lot of work on unit conversions in chemistry class and I realized just how valuable unit conversions are! It helped me so much to have learned them in math class!

I have learned a lot in this course so far. For one thing, I have totally improved my blogging skills! I have really improved on learning on my own. With some teachers, they tell you everything you are supposed to know for the class and expect you to memorize and repeat what they teach. Jojo has provided a course where he teaches, but we also have a lot of other resources that we can gain knowledge from. We can learn from our peers and collaborate in learning on the blog, research using the customized web explorer, watch YouTube mathematical videos, ect.

Like I said above, I love the way that we are learning, and I have learned a lot. One of the coolest things I have learned about is using my resources, and collaborating with peers to learn on the blog.

I had a difficult time doing unit conversion problems at first. They can be pretty long and tedious, but I have improved at them immensely. I think my moment of clarity was when we were doing a very simple problem and I just…understood everything. It was a very good feeling, I felt relieved.

I often encounter things that relate to geometric figures, in everything around me. One of the most useful “real world” things I have learned are unit conversions!

  16. i like class disgusting. being able to talk about the information helps me. I also like the active board and being able to try the problems for myself and have JoJo and the class help as i go along.

The blog is probably one of the most difficult things about the class. I am not tech savvy and have trouble figuring it out.i prefer just being able to ask the teacher a question and not relying on technology. I feel like this blog will greatly reduce my grade even thought im understanding the actual mathematics of the class. i dont like the blog...at all.

But math can be fun. if you get it and i think that JoJo has helped me get it, so far. so i have learned a lot.

  17. My favorite part of our class is when we talked about congruent and similar triangles. I really understand that part of our class. I think the most productive part of our class is when we get into groups. That way we don't have to do as many problems. It keeps everyone engaged and learning. After all the best way to learn it is to teach it.
