1) the thing that suprised me the most about this video was how big all of the numbers are as opposed to a few years ago. the biggest suprise was that by 2013, the computer will have more capacity and be smarter than the human brain.
ReplyDelete2) everything on this video was new to me, so i learned all of it. for example, i learned that soon, china will have more english speakers than the US.
3) this in no way changes my outlook about school.
4) the 'shift' is the technology that is constantly developong and outdating itself. it has been happening since the human race begun.
It didn't surprise overly, because I'd seen it before, but it still is an intense video. What also freaks me out is thinking how soon even these statistics will become outdated.
ReplyDeleteThis did remind me however of another video I've seen that also demonstrates the brilliance of the internet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC4FAyg64OI&feature=featured
All these musicians sent video's of themselves playing the song, w/ music they downloaded and then someone else combined it all into one piece. Pretty cool.
1) The thing that surprised me the most was definitely the programs set up to prevent problems we don't even know exist yet from happening. It seems odd that the issues I think are important now may be trivial in the near future.
ReplyDelete2) I learned that there is an information overload in the world to a point where studies conducted by some colleges will be outdated before some students of said classes even graduate.
3) It's not really directly related to my school experience but I can find some motivation in it. The facts that are presented show that the world is going to change a lot between now and when I graduate. That makes me want to prepare for those changes and be aware of the world as it develops around me. School is a good place to keep updated on the world's current issues so I will be sure to access that facet of Paideia.
4) As is always true, technology continues to outdo itself. This makes you question wether or not the things you do now will seem idiotic and useless in the future.
Oh and I love fatboy slim
ReplyDeleteThe most surprising thing to me is that China will soon be the number one English speaking country in the world. I had always thought that the United states had the most English speakers.
ReplyDeleteI hardly new anything that they said in this video. So I learned everything.
This really changes by outlook on school. It is weird how quickly information is becoming obsolete. However I don't think that this information will cause me to do anything different this school year.
Technology is always shifting. New ideas and technologies are developed, and soon because obsolete because of the new technologies that are always being invented.
i was most surprised at the fact that the top ten most sought after jobs next year did not exist 6 years ago. interesting that even as there are these demands for new jobs, the economy still suffers. how ironic.
ReplyDeletei don't really try and keep up with technology that much, but im by no means isolated from it. i have an ipod. computer. ect... but i know (and this video was just reinforcing this) that technology does out run itself as henry said. it keeps outrunning itself faster and faster too. kinda scary, but i think that a lot of the fear of the rapid expansion of technology is influenced by the media (aaaaah robots taking over the world!) we still have to remember that technology is a tool we use.
interesting video
1. I was really suprised that that the top 10 jobs didn't exist in 2004, that we're preparing kids for jobs that don't exist and that half of what students getting their 4 year technical degree are learning will be outdated by their third year. It's shoking to me how fast things are changing due to technology. Kinda freaky. Especially since technology has so much to do with so much to do with peoples lives, now. The fact that one out of eight couples married in the U.S last year met online is so different now to how things used to be when meeting whoever you're going to marry.
ReplyDelete2. I vaguely knew some of the facts, but they were just small things about how powerful technology is becoming. So pretty much everything in that video was just learned.
3. It doesn't so much change the way i think about school but is more showing me what is in the future for jobs--which my generation will be getting from the education we have now.
4. So much shift is happening. Shift in the communcation of people, shift in the hobbies and the things people do for fun--rather than going and doing something outside, or what not people are using technology to do things.
1. I think the thing that actually surprised me the most was the part about India's honor students being greater than the population of the US. THe part about the top ten jobs not being available in 2004 was also really strange. I'm just so used to going with the flow I didn't even realize it.
ReplyDelete2. I've seen this before, but I just really started THINKING about it.
3. I don't really think it changes my outlook on school. I mean, school is school, I have to go. Like Henry said it really just makes me want to prepare for those changes.
4. Technology is developing and will continue to at an alarming rate. It's a little scaring that we're shifting into an era with super-smart computers that compute better than the human mind...
And I looove this song.
Most importantly, I was surprised that by 2049 a super computer would be produced and would have a greater processing ability than all human minds combined. I learned that the United States is really not one of the giant countries I had thought it to be. This video showed me how massive India actually is. I'm also now more motivated to get a deeper comprehension of math so that I can understand all the things that begin to happen in my lifetime with regards to technology. Our world is changing rapidly from notes and paper to the internet and technology.
ReplyDelete1. Although I have seen this before I was still surprised when the video said that there will be a super computer that will comprehend and be able to do more than a human brain. It is surprising because I would like to know how they will give computers emotions.
ReplyDelete2.I didn't learn too much since I had seen it before. I did think of ways to prevent computers from taking over but then felt it wouldn't work because we would fall behind other countries in technology if we stopped building more and more technologies.
3. Not really but as far as this year goes I would like to do a lot of things better and continue to do well in the things I excel in.
4. International countries are becoming more powerful than the U.S. in certain areas.
5. That is an interesting fact because I didn't know that and now I do.
1. I was suprised by the estimation that a weeks worth of the NYtimes contains more info than a person was likely to come across in a lifetime on the 18th century. This suprised just because it brought into perspective just how much our world is globalized, and how much information we are able to share and recive, both rapidly and globally.
ReplyDelete2. Yes, I learned that there are 5x as many words in the english language as there were in Shakespeare's time.
3. This video just made me think about the effort that students and everyday people have to make to keep up with original technology and information. On a personal level I think it will affect the effort i make to learn about this new information and technology.
4. I think there are many major shifts that are happening right now, the ones highlighted in the video were:The shift of social, political and technological power from the U.S to countries like China and India. The shift from a slower pace of technological and information-sharing progress. As well as the shift from manuel and traditional ways of working, studying and socializing to a more technological way of doing these things.
This was a big shock to me when i watched this video, because everytime you learn something and got good at it, theres something else or more advanced information out there that is better then that one thing you got good at. It made me aware of that, made me want to go and see if there is a better or more advanced way of doing something. When they said those things i was talking about it also reminded me about a video game like madden, because even though you just bought madden 09, in a couple of months there coming out with a better version of madden(madden 10).
ReplyDeleteLike I said in class, this video scares the crap out of me, but at the same time I appreciate technology in this modern world. We're lazy, and new technology will makes life easier than it already is (present day). The developing world isn't something that most of us think about often; our generation expects a higher, more efficient quality of life than our grandparents and parents had, and very few people dwell on what this expectation really means. Modern technology is rapidly becoming more and more a large portion of our culture, a momentum which is now impossible to stop. The idea of creating a robot with some sort of database capacity that can outdo the human brain/mind really disturbs me, though. We're basically setting ourselves up for an invasion or something of equal scifi horror. It's really interesting, but at the same time seems a bit idiotic.
ReplyDelete1. I was really surprised at the amount of information we're provided with just by using the Internet. It's obvious that there are tons of pages containing massive amounts of info at our fingertips, but it really sunk in when the video mentions how, in the 19th century, people couldn't get knowledge of, or access to as many resources that we're privileged with.
2. I learned lots of things from this video...like how many babies are born over the course of about five (?) minutes. That was cool. It displays how quickly the world's population is expanding.
3. This video also brought up the fact that most information learned in school over the course of 2 years becomes renewed or invalid by the 3rd year. That almost makes getting an education seem ridiculous, even though it's not crazy right now.
4. Technology is helping millions of people across the globe get access to healthcare, international businesses, and education, among other things. At the rate we're going, it seems that a shift has already happened.
i was surprised by how all the numbers in the video were so big, like all of the facts had huge drastic numbers to them.
ReplyDeleteyes, the video, and most of the information was new to me.
the video said that we would forget most of the information we learned in or 1st year by our 3rd year of schooling, and that makes getting an education seem pointless, when i know that its not, its something that your really must have, and is good to have
the shift is that technology, while it is helping tons of people all across the world, it is believed that it will in a way "take over"...
I was most suprised by the 1000 dollar computer that would be abe to store more information than our brain. This would mean that computers will soon be better than humans.
ReplyDeleteI learned that technology is a lot more advanced than we think.
It does not change the way i think about school. However it does show a different side of what we see in our lives. Normally we think of computers and phones and so on as assistants to humans. The video really shows that soon computers will not even need humans because they will be able to do everything we can but better.
The shift is that society is moving towards only relying on computers.
I found this video alarming and scary but I was still interested. Yes the idea of a computer smarter than us is scary but there are potential benefits. But it does seem as though the scientist want to play god buy creating their own intelligent race. It is hard to guess the true motives because we are not them. What is scary is how fast it is happening. The fact that college students have outdated info is alarming to say the least it makes one think about the fact that we might make a mistake but since we are moving so fast not catch it till it is to late. Our world as seen allot of progress in the last 50 years and it is clear that it is not stopping anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteAs everyone has said the thing that surprised me the most were the numbers. From how 25% of Indian's = the total on Americans to how around the 2040's there will be a computer for $1,000 that can compute more than the human mind. However, with all this technology the question at hand is, Are we becoming better individuals as a result? Is all this technology moving us further away from what is truly important in our lives (such as love, family, nature, etc) or is it pushing us away?
ReplyDeleteI believe in the idea that it takes a village to raise a child. In comparison it takes nations to change the world. The video talked about how other countries r ahead of us regarding math and science, can we truly grow with this sense of being #1 or is it merely politics? As Nobel Prize winner Johns Forbes Nash Jr said to produce growth and improvement one must do what is best for the oneself AND the group. So, lets talk about a improvement of the world as a whole. I am optimistic that technology and innovation is the key to helping those who truly need it, the poor. This new way of sharing information and new found technology will help push the boundaries of literacy and bring higher education to poor countries.
Coming from another country I knew some of the numbers, so they were of no surprise.
This video is surprising overall. It is amazing how many things we are trying to "improve or make better" to make our lifes maybe "easier". But we are spending so much time, effort, and money on thisngs we don't really need. Like making that computer to be smarter than a human. Instead of making that we should worry about the issues going on in the world like helping the poor and needy and education too. I dont have a problem progressing but its the things we progress in that we should think about. I mean do we really need that smart computer.....

ReplyDeleteI thought this video was a total eye opener, the talk our class had after seeing it was quite insightful! It's disturbing to think that we could posssibly leave forever with our thoughts in a computer. I don't know why anyone would want to though. And the fact about India's honor students shows that American isn't just known as the fat country but the stupid one too! But you of course you have to take into consideration that India's population is crazy large!
I found the part about India's top 25% of students being more than the number of U.S. citizens. That really showed me how smallthe U.S. is.
ReplyDeleteI now think that some things we learn in school are not totally nescessary to learn because it might be outdated in a few years, when we will actually need it.
This video also showed that we are shifting to a technological, internet based society, and that soon we will rely heavily on computers.
I found it very surprising that we are preparing people for jobs that do not yet exist, taking advantage of technologies that have no yet been created when the human mind has reahced this point where the technological growth in our society is practically exponential i find it extremely hard to wrap my mind around that idea. I mean one year in computer years is more like 5 years, if i bought a top of the line computer 3 years ago, it's outdated now. Compare that with the rate of new techknowlogies being invented say 100 or 150 years ago. I learnt that India has more honor honor children then America has children, i always knew that that part of the world has some very impressive statistics to boast about when it comes to SAT scores and things of that nture, but the fact that they have more honor children then we have children is an entirely new one on me. Doesn't really change my outlook on school, I mean I will probably think more about the implications the next time a new technology emerges, but I'm still going to try my best and pay attention in class as was my original intention when it comes to school, so not much has changed through my viewing this video on that front. The shift that is happening in my view is that computers are becoming more and more advanced and things that only a zaney sci-fi movie would have represented in the 1970s could now only be a few years or a decade off.
ReplyDeleteWow. This video really related to what JoJo has been saying relating to "technology is our future, so we should learn to use it and incorporate it into our classroom". Computer technology is moving forward at an alarmingly fast speed, it is both interesting and frightening what modern science and technology has enabled us to do. If you remember how quickly technology has progressed within our lifetime (remember those enormous grey computers, and those cards we would use as cds? look at the ipod, and the advances they have made with each generation over such a short time. You can do almost anything with a high tech mobile phone), it is amazing to imagine it speeding up further. It seems every moment scientists are coming up with new radical ideas relating to computer technology. The internet is one of the most advanced things, it's developing so quickly and gaining so many new sights every day. Many people are concerned about the internets growth, and it is concerning, because to an extent, the internet becomes permenant history. It is impossible to monitor what is going on with the internet, and what is on the internet. So the internet is a scary thing, but I am happy that we are embraseing new technology in this class and learning about how to use it for our advantage. It is a great idea on jojos part, and i personally think our class blog is pretty impressive. I enjoyed this video, it challenged my ideas of modern technology, and frightened me a little, but on the whole, it was very interesting.
ReplyDeleteThis video was very interesting in the fact that the united states is so far behind in technology and learning in general. the fact that india has more honor students than we have people is incredible. the fact that america is the place everyone wants to be, but we are behind on many things. so why are we so popular? our health care isnt better, our schools arent better, why is america the place to be?
ReplyDeletethats what i got out of the clip.
kharon
What surprised me the most was the amount that will be created within my lifetime. What scares me the most is the super computer, because I don't really like the thought of something smarter than the smartest minds. How will we be able to control it?
ReplyDeleteIt didn't change much with my opinion of education. However, I think that maybe people should work harder to gain their education to lessen the gap between the people who are 'super smart' and those who have never even finished their highschool education.
-None of it really surprised me, I kind of expected the numbers to be kind of high being that I already knew what the video was about.
ReplyDelete- I learned that the U.S wasn't really as big as I thought it was. When they said India's top 25% of students are more than the number of U.S. citizens. That was kind of surprising i guess.
-Not really, I just want to do the best I can at Paideia and go to a good college
-I think people are starting to be more dependent on technology. Not that thats a bad thing, but technology can be positive and negative.
This blog is now closed to grading. Feel free to continue making comments!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I definitely remembering commenting this I will comment once more. I thought this video was extremely interesting, esp. the different facts. I feel like it's not necessarily who's kids are the smartest but the culture of each country that plays a major part in how people feel about school and even life.
ReplyDelete"...for students strating a 4 year technical degree that means that half of what they study will be outdated by thier third year.."
ReplyDeletejesus christ!! why are we in school? that was i guess the scariest part of the video, that and the point about how there are more honor students in india than there are students in the usa. that made me awefuly uncomfortable and distressed. is all seems unfortunate and horrible for us.
I think this video is scary mostly for the fact that it makes you feel so insignificant i feel like however hard i try in life there are so many more people to one up me. it makes you feel like you have to be truly exceptional to succeed.
